Cheney September Overview
Hi folks! Summer has come to a quick wrap up already. This overview is running a little late, and based on feedback I've flipped the order: what's still ahead is up top, and the recap of earlier September is at the bottom.
Put these on your calendar:
- Saturday, September 19: Community Day at Cheney High School, supporting the band programs
- Tuesday, September 22: City Council, with the third and final reading of the new Arts Commission
- Friday, September 25: Neighborfest at EWU, with a City of Cheney booth
- Saturday, September 26: Coffee with Council at the Farmers Market
Coming Up This Month
September 19 from 11-3pm | Community Day
Cheney High School
The 4th annual Community Day supports the Cheney High School band programs, and there is something for the whole family. Expect a marketplace with local vendors, a classic car show, food trucks, a dunk tank with local "celebrities," and field games for the younger crowd. The day ends with the Cheney High School Marching Band performing their 2026 field show. Hosted by the Blackhawk Band Parent Booster. Details on the Facebook event.
September 22 at 11am | Pass Through The Pillars
EWU Showalter Hall
Eastern's annual welcome for new freshmen and transfer students. The community is invited to shout, wave, and celebrate as the students run up to Showalter, honoring a tradition past generations of students started.
September 22 at 6pm | City Council
Council Chambers at City Hall
Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. This meeting includes proposed finance policy updates and the third and final reading of the creation of a new Arts Commission.

September 23 | EWU Fall Quarter Starts
Eastern Washington University
First day of fall quarter for university students!
September 24 from 2-6pm | Back to School Event

September 25 from 10-2pm | Neighborfest
EWU Arevalo Mall
This annual event welcomes new and returning students into fall quarter. Student clubs and university departments introduce themselves, and community organizations and businesses introduce students to the larger community. This year the City of Cheney will have a booth with representatives from the administration, various departments, and City Council. The Cheney Police Department's Crisis Response Team will have a booth too. Swing by! It's open to the public as well as students.
September 26 from 9-1pm | Cheney Farmer's Market
Veteran's Memorial Park
The local Farmers Market meets twice a month at Veterans Memorial Park, with lots of great local vendors and live music.
September 26 from 9-1pm | Coffee with Council
Cheney Farmer's Market at Veteran's Memorial Park
City Council will have a booth at the Farmers Market again for Coffee with Council! Grab a coffee (or other beverage) from one of the vendors, come by to say hi, and chat about what's on your mind regarding our community.
September 28 at 5:30pm | Feed Cheney
Wren Pierson Building, 615 4th St
Feed Cheney is a community run organization that provides a free meal to anyone in need, no questions asked, and creates space to build community. They generally meet on the last Monday night of the month at Wren Pierson. A local community resource is always on hand too, so folks can connect with a different organization each month.
September 28 at 6pm | Planning Commission Special Meeting
Council Chambers, City Hall
The Planning Commission is holding a special meeting to wrap up final items on the comprehensive plan before it goes to City Council in October.

September 1 at 3pm | Lodging Tax Committee
Finance Conference Room, City Hall
This committee meets at least quarterly to review applications for use of lodging taxes. Recommendations for approval go before City Council for a vote.

September 2 at 12pm | CMA Community Meeting
Wren Pierson Center
On the first Wednesday of every month, the Cheney Members Association hosts a community meeting open to the public. It's a great place to learn what's going on across the city: local government, the school district, the university, the library, parks & rec, and more.
September 3 at 5:30pm | Historic Preservation Commission
Utility Building
The Historic Preservation Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings are public, and you can attend in person or over Zoom.
September 7 | Labor Day Holiday
City offices were closed.
September 8 at 6pm | City Council
Council Chambers in City Hall
This regular meeting included introductions of new Public Works employees and the second reading of the proposal to create a new Arts Commission.

Salnave Park
Cheney Monday Night Dinners hosts a monthly community potluck open to everyone. Summer dinners were held in the park.
September 14 at 6pm | Planning Commission
Council Chambers in City Hall
The Planning Commission meets on the second Monday of every month. This year they have been deeply focused on the comprehensive plan update required by the Washington State Growth Management Act (GMA), which is due at the end of the year.
September 16 from 1-5pm | Sigma Nu Open House
Sigma Nu Fraternity
Sigma Nu is in a historic Cheney house on our local historic registry, and they recently received a grant for maintenance and upgrades. The open house gave the community a chance to see the improvements.
September 16 from 6-7:30pm | FD3 EMS Levy Town Hall
Fire District 3 Station 31, Cheney
Cheney has its own municipal Fire Department, and we are friends and neighbors with Fire District 3, which houses Station 31 within the city. They will have an EMS levy on the November ballot and are hosting a series of town halls to explain what it is and why it matters. Let friends who live in Fire District 3 know they have a chance to learn about it ahead of the election, and encourage them to attend.
