Cheney, Coffee & Civics Book Club!
I have a book club problem. By problem, I mean I LOVE book clubs. However, my book clubs don't normally coincide with my other love – political discourse. Obviously this is a problem with a solution so glaringly obvious it is amazing I didn't think of it earlier – let's start a political book club!
Have you always wanted to read that political memoir, but didn't have anyone to talk to about it? Are you itching to read a How-To on running a campaign? Maybe something about LGBTQ+ struck your fancy this pride month, and you'd like to discuss it as a group. If this is you, we are probably already friends, but now we can also be book club buddies.
You know another thing I love? Ranked Choice Voting. I know what you are thinking – a political junkie who loves RCV and dislikes the current plurality voting system – shocking!
Here's the pitch: About once a quarter each member will nominate a book they want to read that fits the general theme of "political book." There will not be a test, but you know why you are joining this book club after all. Make your case for your book and throw it in the nominations. After nominations, we will all vote using RCV to determine the winner. The winner of the book has the option to run the discussion about it, but no pressure – I'll run it or get a volunteer if leading the discussion isn't your jam. Bring your notes, talk about what you like, didn't like, bring your passion for/against it to the discussion.
As a bonus, I am well known to bring a tasty snack to share. I'm not saying it's pie but lets say nobody is surprised when I bring pie to a gathering.
Ready to join? Send me an email at: book.clubhouse874@passmail.net with the title "3C Book Club" with your name and a short intro and I'll add you to the group with some further instructions. Hope to chat with y'all soon!
Cheers,
Justin
