March Cheney Public Meetings
Happy March! As we head into a new month, here’s a quick overview of the City’s public meetings to add to your calendar. Most meetings now offer a virtual attendance option via Zoom. The City has shifted these to the Webinar format, which helps prevent unwanted disruptions but also limits how community members can participate remotely. If you plan to join online, reach out to the City (Boards & Commissions staff or the City Clerk for Council meetings) to learn what engagement options are available for virtual attendees.

March 5 at 5pm | Civil Service Commission Special Meeting
Mayor's Office Conference Room
This should be a fairly quick meeting. The Fire Department was recently approved to hire two new firefighters, and they’re also filling a vacancy created by a recent departure. The goal is to move quickly so new hires can begin in early April and join the Fire District 3 Training Academy. It’s a tight timeline, but everyone, including the Civil Service Commission, is working to keep the process moving.
Candidate interviews are happening this week. Once the first round is complete, the Civil Service Commission must review and certify the eligibility lists. That certification is the purpose of this special meeting and will allow final interviews with the top candidates to proceed.

March 5 at 5:30pm | Historic Preservation Commission
Cheney Depot, 15 Union Street
The Historic Preservation Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month, and this month’s meeting comes with something special: commissioners have been invited to tour the nearly completed renovation of the Cheney Depot. Because the meeting will take place on-site, there will be no Zoom option available.
This renovation is a major milestone, not just for historic preservation advocates, but for the entire community. The depot is expected to open soon, offering a beautifully restored space for the public to enjoy.

March 10 at 6pm | City Council Regular Meeting
City Hall Council Chambers
City Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
A major focus for the City right now is hiring a permanent Police Chief and City Administrator. Both positions are appointed by Mayor Martin and then come to Council for confirmation. Police Chief candidate interviews took place on March 3, so if a finalist is selected quickly, that confirmation could appear on an upcoming agenda. As of this writing, it does not look like it will be included on this first March agenda.
These are significant leadership roles, and while the City recognizes the urgency of filling them, there’s also a clear commitment to a fair, thorough, and equitable hiring process. The goal is to move efficiently without rushing decisions that deserve careful consideration.

March 24 at 6pm | City Council Regular Meeting
City Hall Council Chambers
City Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, and the agenda is typically posted to the Agenda Center the Thursday before the meeting.
As mentioned, a major focus for the City this month is hiring a permanent Police Chief and City Administrator. Both positions are appointed by Mayor Martin and then come before Council for confirmation. Police Chief candidate interviews took place on March 3, and the timing of the final selection will determine which Council meeting the confirmation appears on, ideally one of the March meetings.
City Administrator interviews are expected later this month and will follow a similar process. If the top candidate is identified quickly, their confirmation could be ready in time for this meeting, though it may ultimately land on an April agenda depending on how the process unfolds.
These are significant leadership decisions, and while the City recognizes the urgency of filling both roles, there is a shared commitment to ensuring the process is thorough, fair, and well‑considered rather than rushed.
Lots is happening across the city right now, and I’m grateful you’re staying engaged. If you see me at any of these meetings, please say hello! I always appreciate connecting with neighbors who care about our community.
