Cheney Parks Board 2-11-2026
Hi folks,
I'm going to try and post my notes from the parks board meetings up on Cheney, Coffee & Civics. The meeting and minutes are public record so I encourage you to download them and review them for yourself. My review will be my thoughts on certain things, and in no way is an 'official' opinion of the parks board or the city in general. With that out of the way, let's get to it!
Agenda for this meeting can be found at the Cheney website agenda center.
Announcement: Summer Pool Season/Family Passes are still at early bird pricing and will be until Easter. It was sent out that you only had until Valentine's day to get the early bird pricing on pool passes, but it's actually until Easter. So if you missed it but wanted one, get it soon! The Easter Bunny loves pool passes for summer fun! Here's a link to read about them from last time, and a direct link if you want to go buy one now.

Veterans Park Mural - This is a project being pursued as a collaboration of Communities in Schools, Cheney Heart & Soul, local business Craft Cupboard via Macey Fredenburg and local artist Sierra Athos. The idea is to work with high school students to paint a mural on the restroom in Veteran's park. The work would be overseen by a local artist at all times. Expected cost is $1k, but there is expected fundraising as part of the program. The mural would reflect it's location and have Veteran's theme to honor our Veterans. Personally, I think this is a great collaboration to bring some art into our community, give students real world experience and honor our veterans. I'm hoping it can be extended in the future to other restrooms within our parks system. Here are some screen shots from the presentation:

Aquatics Update - As I mentioned above, season/family passes are still on sale! Get them before the new year!
Park Rules - The parks board is reviewing the city park rules. They were last approved in 1999. If you have thoughts or feedback email me about it here: parkboard.scorer661@passmail.net. I'd love to hear about it ahead of the next meeting where we will discuss them as a board. Feel free to come and give public commentary as well. Each person is allowed 2 minutes of public commentary at the beginning of the meeting.

Pickleball / Tennis Project Update - As a fair weather pickleball player – some of you crush it all year round, I salute your dedication – I'm pretty excited about this one. The Parks department has been allocated funds from the Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) fund to build pickleball courts next to our current Cedar Street Tennis Courts, along with improving the quality of our tennis courts. Here is the preliminary plans, they are still subject to change:

2026 Park Plan Update -
There are a number of other initiatives in the works this year. Updating and replacing Hagelin Park Shelter, adding trails to the 50 Acre Park, and Xeriscape / Landscaping / Irrigation around the city. The city is considering xeriscaping Kyle Pugh & Sam Webb pocket parks to save on water this summer. A personal call out – if you know the history of how Sam Webb & Kyle Pugh parks got their names, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks so much for reading, let me know if I could improve anything with this format. If you have comments for the Parks Board itself, we take public commentary at the beginning of each meeting. Come see us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at 6pm at the Wren Pierson building. You can find previous meeting minutes at the city's agenda center.
